Cheap Therapy

New Favorite Book

Ok, so we all KNOW I'm pretty weird...but today I embarked on something superfluous...even by my standards...

I organized my library.

It took almost four hours, and came out quite well. I'm pleased. However, I'm also quite sure the system makes sense only to me. Sure...one shelf is all reference books...(where else would one expect to find my Far Side Gallery?)...and one shelf is all history / biography / conservative writing...

The rest of it is arranged...by, well...appearance....

I wanted each author condensed so that all the books by one person were together, but didn't want any one author on different shelves unless that particular author already took up one entire shelf. So - the authors with the most books got priority, and others filled in as needed to complete each shelf.

(This is where I miss being a video store manager who took inordinate pride in "blocking" the new release wall)

Tom Clancy got his own shelf. WEB Griffin got a shelf and a half, John Grisham and James Patterson each got 75% of their shelves. Ken Follett, Ayn Rand, and Michael Crichton filled out those shelves. Paperbacks were still left segregated, even if they were first editions and/or completed sets. Undersized books, for the most part, were also segregated. Antique, or truly valuable books are all on one separate shelf, with few exceptions.

I have the complete works of Ferrol Sams, James Clavell, and Jay McInerney. A few authors like Clancy, Grisham, and Crichton are each within 2 or 3 books of being complete sets. 4 of the 5 series written by Griffin are each complete. Shockingly...I have only two books by Pat Conroy...though over the years I've bought enough first edition copies of "Prince of Tides" to earn me some sort of special prize. (As gifts, no less! For ungrateful women!) One shelf is all books I hated. (I should trade those in, and complete a few sets, huh?)

Many of my books are inscribed to me as gifts, one with an admonition it never better be found in Powell's where almost 15% of my books were purchased used. Four are signed by the authors, one to my Mother that came with a matching set of Robert Carrier kitchen knives - which I use much more than his cookbook - but definitely the weirdest combo.

Two are from my Grandfather Clarence's library. Almost 30% have receipts tucked away from when I got them. Many more have airline ticket stubs, movie stubs, or other random bits of flotsam from my life. 454 volumes. 5 that once belonged to the Fairfax County library system. 3 duplicates. 15 cookbooks. 3 bibles. 1 missing book that was loaned out to a pretty girl 3 years ago.

Someone once told me to never to lend books, give them as gifts from the heart. Are you KIDDING me?

DAMN WOMAN, I want my book back!

Saturday Night

Saturday Night

We drank the first bottle while making dinner, and another while talking about life and old friends over a completely lovely dinner. Nat King Cole sang "Just For The Fun Of It", and we toasted our old friend who had sent the wine. Funny how some friends stand the test of time while others end up...just being a good excuse to drink some excellent wine.

All my mail. EVER.

All my mail. EVER.

Addressed to EVERY place I've ever lived, and THAT speaks volumes! I'm sure there were periods when it would have been easier to address mail to the license plate of my car than an actual address.

It kept the postmen busy, even when things were tough for me...and even though I never said it, that was when it meant the most. It shames me that by comparison, I have sent so little.

I got tons from my Mom...and WOW...over the years she has had a BUNCH of different stationary! A huge amount from my sister Bethie, a good bit from Phil - going all the way back to his days at UNC, pre-dating his becoming my brother-in-law. A few from my brother Andrew, and even a few from my step-Dad BILL! My Grandfather's handwriting always stands out, as do his interesting postcards and stamps. And I have a lot from handwriting we sadly don't get to see anymore...I have an unbelievable volume of mail from "Grandmommy", as we called my Grandmother...and even a few from my Dad, and even my Great Grandmother, TooMa.

It illustrates to me what a lucky person I am to be part of such a great family, and even luckier still to have made some truly great friends. And having seen most of you for my Niece's Christening, it just makes me miss every one of you all that much more.

Return of The Trackball

Old School
Originally uploaded by The Put-Man.

About six months ago I accidentally dumped a soda on my old Kensington ADB (Apple Data Bus - pre-USB) Turbo Mouse Trackball. And I nearly cried when I realized I had frapped one of the sensors - after tear-down & cleaning, it was only capable of side to side movement.

Dead. Kaput. Finito. Nyet. Nada.

I was crushed.

Then Christmas came, and in going through many old boxes of assorted junk, unpacking ornaments and such I came across...A STANDBY EXTRA! It was filthy, scratched, and sticky with lord-knows-what. But the circuit board was GOOD!

So...today I carefully disassembled BOTH trackballs (yes, that's right, I didn't have the heart to throw the old one out - win one for the packrats) - then I carefully scrubbed down the replacement circuit board with isopropyl alcohol and an old toothbrush, then sprayed it with canned air, and reassembled all the best bits, all cleaned up. Plugged the connector into to my old (circa 1998) ADB to USB adapter...and...Lo & Behold...Mac OS 10.4 had no problems with this franken-mouse contraption!

Ahhh...the joy of being able to ZOOOM across the screen with a flick of a finger...just like an old school arcade game. Like meeting an old friend I never thought I'd see again...it's the little things that bring us joy.

The Geographic Center of Nowhere

The Geographic Center of Nowhere

Sometimes a long drive to nowhere, with a good friend, and lot's to catch up on...yeah...that's good medicine for the soul.

Now if there was just somewhere out here to pee...?

In January, I successfully accomplished my goal of achieving a TV free life. I have now been without TV service for more than 6 weeks. This is a good thing.

For February, my goal is to become a morning workout person.

Oh, quit laughing...that's not very supportive...!

January pretty much sucked...
